Fame is a monster. The public spotlight pointed at every celebrity, athlete and politician probably places more stress on them than any number of stage lights under which media figures thrive. But not every celebrity opens up under the harsh scrutiny of a reporter’s question or paparazzi flash bulbs. After releasing a seminal break-up album in 2011, Adele closed herself off, focusing on establishing a family and having a baby. As 21 remained on Billboard’s top album chart, Adele didn’t lavish in the spotlight. Instead, the singer-songwriter reflected upon the relationship which spawned her record-breaking album and crafted a follow-up.

While Valentine’s Day has passed, I’d like to express my opinion on the day all about love. While I have been very single for the past 18 years of my life, I’ve never felt alone or sad on this day. I was always distracted by the candy and presents my parents would give me, everyone around me was also single and, as a guy, I don’t get a lot of the pressure from the media to feel alone on Valentine’s Day.

Surfer Blood exploded into notoriety in 2010, with the release of their debut album Astro Coast. The album, along with its effortlessly catchy lead single “Swim” were featured in numerous “best-of” lists for the year, and the band found themselves going from relatively unknown to being on everyone’s radar in only a few months’ time. After much touring, Surfer Blood released their sophomore album Pythons in 2013. Pythons was not met with as much critical acclaim and many music publications deemed the band to be in a “sophomore slump,” although fans were in no way disappointed with the release.

When it comes to sexual violence, particularly domestic/dating violence, it is easy for students to dismiss the issues believing it an issue that does not affect them. Unfortunately, students are more at risk than many believe. According to domestic violence expert Dr. Sandra Stith, about 30 percent of college students have been in relationships involving physical aggression and even more have been in emotionally abusive relationships.
