While the Badgers' hopes for Pasadena are as dead as Oasis, the
Big Ten battle for a berth in the Bowl of Roses rages on with Ohio
State, Michigan and Purdue set to pounce on one another over the
next two weeks. With the Wolverines, Buckeyes and Boilermakers each
possessing one conference loss, two games to play and at least one
opportunity to play against another of the Big Three, the Cardinal
breaks down each team's chances.

After a brutal two-week stretch at home, the University of
Wisconsin football team readies itself for a matchup in Evanston,
Ill., against lowly Northwestern. The No. 17 Badgers (3-1 Big Ten,
6-2 overall) are eager to bounce back from last Saturday's narrow
loss to then-No. 15 Purdue, while the unranked Wildcats (1-2, 3-4)
hope to bring their winning streak to a season-high two games.

Following the disappointment of a 5-7 season in 2001-UW's first
losing season since 1995-the 2003 spring game could and should have
marked a return to normalcy. Instead, the meaningless scrimmage
will forever be looked upon as one of the lowest points in Badger
football history: senior receiver Lee Evans, coming off a
phenomenal season in which he obliterated both the Wisconsin and
Big Ten receiving records, came down awkwardly on his left knee and
tore a ligament. In that moment, Evans' season ended before it
started and UW was forced to enter the year without its best
playmaker.

Quick. Name the most successful UW team from the past year. Was
it men's basketball, with its second consecutive Big Ten title and
solid showing in the NCAA tournament? Or perhaps men's track, which
won the Big Ten Indoors in March and is shooting for a second title
in May in the Big Ten Outdoors in Minneapolis. Both teams certainly
have a good case, but so does a more unusual suspect, the UW men's
ultimate team.

The UW football teams of 1998 and 1999 set a high standard on
the field that has not been matched in the four years since.
Although highlighted by its back-to-back Rose Bowls, which thrust
the Badgers onto the national football scene (and led to
unprecedented increases in undergraduate applications), UW also
succeeded in keeping its off-field transgressions to a
minimum.

After a college team wins a conference championship, it usually
can afford to take a break. With next season seeming so far off, it
is only normal for a team to momentarily loosen its grip. This,
however, is not the case for the UW men's track team.

grow louder with each improbable Minnesota three-pointer until the
Barn shook from its cheers.
