When I was walking by the merchandise table in the Barrymore Theatre, set up for Nick Lowe’s Quality Holiday Revue tour, I noticed an item that was (in every sense) jarring. Pinned to a board was a T-shirt advertising the event, with cartoon headshots of Lowe and his backing band, Los Straitjackets. But there was another face beaming out in peach and pastel, which was the reason I paused: Ian McLagan, who died suddenly Dec. 3.

On June 8th, 1954, a beautiful Japanese traditional bell was presented to the United Nations New York headquarters by the United Nations Associations of Japan in the name of People of Nippon. They named the bell for “absolute world peace.” However, there would be no use of tolling such a beautiful bell every year if Japan distances itself from the others. It has been approximately 68 years since the end of WWII and Japan is trying to go back to its “old glorious days” while Germany is walking the path of endless apologies and self-retrospection.

So last week I started into my (very one-sided) discussion of this year’s Oscar field, and I spent most of that time looking at Tom Hooper’s adaptation of “Les Misérables” and little of that time talking about Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” and Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln.”

The point of college, as far as society is concerned, is to learn. The idea is that we get an education somewhere between watching football and getting smashed. This education is more than just what we learn in our classes, however. The most important things we learn in college are the life lessons we receive along the way.

In the 1970s, a man named Brian Eno surfaced on the music scene with radical new ideas on how to write and listen to music. Over a long and illustrious career, Eno has produced and inspired some of the world’s top musical talent—David Bowie, Coldplay, The Talking Heads—and the list is undeniably impressive.

Raspberry Chipotle is a David Bacco seasonal. It has a
smooth texture with an unmistakable raspberry purée center. The
heat from the chipotle is very subtle, but noticeable.

On Sept. 17 Congress approved far-reaching legislation that
would expand federal aid to college students and end federal
subsidies to private lenders. The Students Aid and Fiscal
Responsibility Act, if passed by the Senate and signed by the
president, would allocate $87 billion in post-secondary education
over ten years. The bill would increase the amount of federal aid
available to university students and increase funding to community
colleges. Perhaps most importantly, the bill would simplify the
spiteful Federal Application for Student Aid, infamously known to
students as the FAFSA.

Entering my final year here at Madison, there are some
things that just don't shock me like they did freshman year.
Three-story beer bongs, crying freshmen, Evangelicals, Harvest
Fest; it was all crazy for a year or two, but somewhere toward the
end of junior year I became habituated to seeing a guy play guitar
while standing on his head.

close this chapter of my life with some significant,

me.
