Last month, the Cleveland Indians voted to remove their Chief Wahoo imagery from their uniforms effective next year. Cleveland’s Chief Wahoo and other Native American mascots have been the source of years of controversy due to their inaccurate depiction of indigenous peoples. And while the removal of Chief Wahoo is a step in the right direction for Cleveland, it barely scratches the surface of eradicating cultural appropriation in sports.

After being shut out of the top two in all three of her individual events at last year’s Big Ten Championships, sophomore swimmer Beata Nelson knew it was time to drop the hammer and show the conference and the country what she could do. While breaking three school records and two Big Ten records, Nelson led the No. 23 Badgers to a fifth-place finish in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday.

With championship season on the horizon, the unranked (men) /No. 19 (women) Wisconsin swim teams will head to Notre Dame for the two-day Shamrock Invitational. On Oct. 19, an 18-year-old freshman at Wisconsin, who spent the majority of high school training alone, put the entire NCAA swimming and diving community on notice when he beat 2016 Olympian Jay Litherland in the 100-yard backstroke at a dual meet. That swimmer’s name is Matt Novinski, and he’s hoping his performance in the pool won’t let opponents forget it.

Twenty minutes after winning his first race in a Wisconsin cap, junior swimmer Tyler Zelen lost his goggles on the dive in for the 100-yard freestyle. Although he got dead last in that particular race, Zelen showed his grit as he continued without his goggles and ultimately turned in a solid time of 49.87 seconds.
