The end is near. Doomsday prophecies aside, the school year is nearly complete and for a lot of Badgers, myself included, it means our time in college is nearly over as well. Compared to the life ahead of us, college is but a small fraction of time. As short as it seemed, it has been one hell of a trip and one that will have a profound impact on me for the rest of my life. More than the friendships, classes, parties and Union Terrace, college is a remarkable opportunity to challenge yourself and in so doing, discover your potential.

It’s difficult to have a citizenry who gives a damn about voting when they immediately associate politics as a shouting match between two sides who are constantly trying to undermine the other. There is the office of the presidency and then there is the President of the United States. There is the governorship and there is the governor. In both of these instances, the titles and the individuals themself are not synonymous but you must have civility when discussing the man or woman holding that office. When the media is critical of, and investigates Gov. Scott Walker or President Barack Obama’s policies it is healthy and just as much a part of the democratic process as voting, calling them names in an effort to boost ratings or web traffic, is not.

I have a therapist. I’ve never felt completely confident admitting that fact to people, even my immediate family. Now, however, I think it’s important, particularly for university students, to know that you are not alone in fighting your mental health problems. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in every four Americans will experience a mental health condition at least once in their life. It’s also important to know that anyone can be effected by a mental health problem. Abraham Lincoln, Isaac Newton, Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill, Terry Bradshaw, Princess Diana, Sheryl Crow, Jim Carrey, Ashley Judd, J.K. Rowling, Heath Ledger and, most recently, Robin Williams all suffered from mental health problems. It is not simply a poor person’s problem or a drug user’s problem.

Dear Gov. Walker,

News reports over winter break provided a flurry of headlines worth talking about, from the CIA torture report, gasoline prices falling to the lowest they’ve been in six years and President Obama restoring diplomatic relations with Cuba. All of these events possess a high level of significance, but none more-so than the terror attack in Paris Jan. 7 when two gunmen wearing masks and wielding assault weapons killed 12 people. Their target? A cartoon newspaper named Charlie Hebdo that prints satirical cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

Scott Walker was able to emerge victorious in his third election in four years and returns as Wisconsin’s governor. Gov. Walker’s win coincided with a dominant night for Republicans around the country. Despite the fact that Gov. Walker’s tenure has been marred with controversy, he was able to defeat Democratic candidate Mary Burke with relative ease.

Today is the last day to vote in the 2014 midterm elections. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. across the state. This election is the culmination of all the political ads you’ve been inundated with over the past months and those awkward Facebook debates with your freshman year roommate’s weird Uncle Jeffrey that went on far too long without a semblance of a hope of changing anyone’s mind.

Today, Vanity Fair released an interview with Jennifer Lawrence where she spoke about the celebrity nude photo leak. This is the first time she has responded publicly to the situation involving an Internet hack that published revealing photos of her and hundreds of other female celebrities Aug. 31 of this year. The victims of the hack were all female with the exception of one male’s photos who were revealed just days ago in the fourth round of hacks. Lawrence spoke with Vanity Fair’s Sam Kashner where she said, “Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this.” She went on to say, “It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of world. ”

As many Badgers are aware, yesterday was the day which student basketball tickets went on sale. After last year’s roller coaster ride of a season, which ended just two points short of a trip to the national championship, its no wonder the tickets were a hot item, completely selling out in just five minutes. Needless to say, there is a lot of anticipation flooding campus about the upcoming season. Undoubtedly there will be those left heartbroken when they discover they just weren’t lucky enough to snag their guaranteed place in the Kohl Center this winter. Who can blame them for feeling so distraught when the Badgers go up against the likes of Duke, Michigan State, Iowa, Indiana, and Nebraska at home this season.

Welcome to college. More specifically, welcome to the University of Wisconsin –Madison. Your adventure into higher education is just around the corner so it is important to remember just what that means. This is your education. Not your parents’ or your grandparents’ or any other family member’s. While you may wish to follow in a family member’s footsteps and follow their career path, it is ultimately your decision to make. I know too many college students who are following a particular career path because it’s what their parents want them to do; and because their parents write out the tuition checks; they feel somehow obligated to them. If this sounds familiar, I implore you to sit down with your parents and have a serious talk with them.

Abraham Lincoln said, “With public sentiment, nothing can fail; without it, nothing can succeed.” In 1989 Americans celebrated the 20-year anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the moon. Then President George H. W. Bush stated, “Before the 50th anniversary of our first flight landing on the Moon, the American flag should be planted on Mars!” We are now five years from the former president’s dream, and it appears all too certain that we will not be planting the American flag on Mars anytime soon. So what happened? When did we decide as a society our thirst for space exploration was quenched on the moon?
