Hundreds of students met at the Red Gym at 9 a.m. Wednesday and marched to Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin's office at Bascom Hall, where they met with university officials and delivered demands to Mnookin.
UW-Madison's new academic building, the School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences, was dedicated by community members on its current construction site on April 25, 2023. Among the speakers that honored this event were Wis. Gov. Tony Evers, Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin and UW System President Jay Rothman.
The Engineering EXPO 2023 student-run event, organized by the EXPO 2023 Team, invited community members to explore various indoor and outdoor exhibits on April 22. Other activities available for attendees to partake in included lab tours, live demonstrations and several keynote speaker events.
At the heart of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, up a few flights of steps and onto a small metal platform, you will find a keyboard unlike most, made of wooden keys and a set of wooden pedals. The instrument itself is not located behind the keys, like in a piano. Instead, metal wires go straight up to a set of 56 carillon bells, each playing their own note to create the instrument’s unique sound that resonates far across campus. The bells sit at the top of the aptly-named Carillon Tower, located just across from UW-Madison’s Sewell Social Sciences building. The tower was built with funds from senior gifts from the classes of 1917 through 1926, who originally donated funds to rebuild the Bascom Hall dome, where the carillon bells were initially meant to be housed. It eventually became evident the dome would never be rebuilt, and instead, the money was put in use to construct the tower, according to UW-Madison’s Department of Facilities Planning and Management. The bells are played by UW-Madison Carillonneur Lyle Anderson, who has held the title since the mid 1980s. The Rally for Our Rights gathered community members to stand up for transgender and women's rights on Sunday, April 2 at the Wisconsin State Capitol. This rally was organized by some of Madison's local-area advocacy organizations, including Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, Women Win Wisconsin and Medical Students for Choice.
The Wisconsin Union Directorate Distinguished Lecture Series Committee hosted Dr. Jane Goodall, a world-renowned primatologist and environmental activist. She spoke and led a discussion at Shannon Hall of Memorial Union on Sunday, Mar. 26 to UW-Madison students, staff and local community members who attended the event.
The Wisconsin women's hockey team upset Ohio to win the program's seventh national championship, setting a new record for the most championships in NCAA women's hockey. The Badgers came home to celebrate with fans in the LaBahn Arena on Monday evening.
Wisconsin defeated Bradley 81-62 in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). Steven Crowl scored a career-high 36 points, tying Michael Finley for the school record for most points scored in a postseason game. The Badgers advance to play Liberty at 11 a.m. on Sunday in the Kohl Center.
The Pride Society and the Queer & Trans Engineers & Qouncil (QTE) of UW-Madison hosted the Gothiqueer Pride Prom on Mar. 3 at Great Hall in Memorial Union. The event was open to the public and provided light refreshments, as well as a photo booth area. The drag show, starring local performers, began after attendees socialized.
The Badgers fell to Rutgers at home on Saturday 57-58, bringing their conference record to 7-9. The Badgers risk missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018. They play Iowa next tonight in the Kohl Center.
Wisconsin Track and Field hosted the Badger Valentine Invitational in the Shell on Friday. Josie Shaefer set a school record in shotput, and Chloe Lindeman set a school record in weight throw. The men's and women's teams each won 7 events. The Badgers travel next to Geneva, Ohio for the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
