University of Wisconsin-Madison Housing residents will be limited to one guest each during Saturday’s Mifflin Street Block Party, which typically draws in thousands of visitors to Madison.
The enforcement is a departure from policies put in place during Halloween weekend last fall, where students were required to register guests and pay a $100 fee.
Guests hoping to stay in the dorms are required to be accompanied by residents at all times on Saturday, and residence halls’ exterior doors will also be locked, according to the email.
“Mifflin is a one-day, daytime event which does not need the same level of resources as Halloween,” Brendon Dybdahl, University Housing’s director of marketing and communications, said in an email to The Daily Cardinal. “We do, however, recognize that Mifflin brings a lot of added activity and visitors to campus, and resident safety is vital.”
Check-in stations at Witte, Sellery and Ogg will require residents to show their Wiscards to staff in order to enter the buildings during the day on Saturday.
House fellows are expected to conduct additional rounds throughout the day. The email said that University Housing anticipates an increased presence of UW-Madison Police Department surrounding the Southeast residence halls.
An April 14 message to residents also said alcohol containers like BORGs will be confiscated by housing staff.
“University Housing treats the date of the Mifflin Street Block Party differently due to the high level of activity and events,” Assistant Director of Residence Life Beth Miller said in the email. “Our goal is to maintain your safety.”
