If you’ve ever been to a Wisconsin hockey game, you’ll probably remember one chant better than any other. After every Wisconsin goal, the entire crowd joins to count the goals and scream, “We want more!” For decades, at the center of it all, was superfan Philip J. Dzick.
Dzick, who graduated from UW-Madison in 1969, first established his reputation as a legendary Wisconsin sports fan at a 1981 NCAA tournament game in Potsdam, New York when he riled up the 50 or so Wisconsin fans in attendance to spell out “Badgers.” The Badgers went on to win that series and eventually capture the 1981 National Championship.
Dzick was known for his iconic white sweater, glasses and the cards and signs he brought with him to games to help engage the crowd. While the “we want more!” chant was his most famous, Dzick lent his bellowing voice to all kinds of chants and cheers to energize the Badger faithful.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Dzick’s regular attendance at Badger games was halted by worsening health conditions, which led him to pass the torch to family friend Curt Diehl.
While Wisconsin’s iconic “sweater guy” has passed away, his enthusiasm and love for the Badgers will be felt after every Badger goal and every time the Kohl Center erupts in cheer.
Dzick is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Dzick.
