Fifteen student reporters, and the entire Cardinal staff, were honored for their news stories, investigative reporting, photography, web design and audio work. 

The Daily Cardinal earns 12 Milwaukee Press Club awards, three in investigative reporting

Fifteen student reporters, and the entire Cardinal staff, were honored for their news stories, investigative reporting, photography, web design and audio work.

The Daily Cardinal received 12 awards in the Milwaukee Press Club’s Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism contest, including four gold honors and all three awards in the Best Investigative Reporting category. 

Members of The Daily Cardinal attended the Gridiron Awards Dinner at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee on Friday to receive the newspaper’s awards. 

The Milwaukee Press Club also honored former Wisconsin Governor and University of Wisconsin System President Tommy Thompson and CNN chief congressional correspondent Manu Raju. Students had the opportunity to meet Thompson and Raju before the dinner. 

The Daily Cardinal is honored to receive the following awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.  

Will Cioci received the Gold Award for Best Pandemic Story in Print. Through text and photos, Cioci reported on the emotions and experiences of freshmen whose final high school years were “turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic.” 

Samantha Henschel received the Bronze Award for Best News Story. Henschel reported on online scamming after the ticketing process for University of Wisconsin-Madison football games went digital. 

In the audio category, Hope Karnopp received the Gold Award for Best News Story Single or Ongoing for an episode of the Cardinal Call that featured Henschel’s story. The segment aired on WORT-FM. 

Kalli Anderson received the Bronze Award for Best Long Soft Feature Story. Anderson reported the story of former Badger football player Daniel Howell Jr., who works at Porchlight, Inc. and returned to UW-Madison to earn his bachelor’s degree in psychology. 

Amelia Zollner received the Bronze Award for Best Short Hard Feature Story. Zollner reported on Unmask UW, an organization that formed to question the campus mask mandate. 

In the online exclusively category, Sophia Vento and Lekha Kachoria received the Bronze Award for Best News Story. Vento and Kachoria reported on an event with Sen. Ted Cruz that organizers moved off campus due to UW-Madison’s mask policy. 

The Daily Cardinal earned all three honors in the Best Investigative Reporting category.

Cailyn Schiltz and Natalie Zientek received the Gold Award. They reported on how UW-Madison’s admissions processes and decisions put sexual assault survivors at risk.

Cailyn Schiltz also received the Silver Award. Schiltz reported on the unsafe conditions that many student renters experience in Madison’s competitive and expensive apartment market. 

Addison Lathers received the Bronze Award. Lathers reported on why Lakeshore Path, sometimes referred to as “Rapeshore Path,” is not lit when many students feel unsafe using it at night. 

In the visual journalism category, Taylor Wolfram received the Gold Award for Best Still Photograph/Photos. Wolfram captured the moments after the Badgers clinched the NCAA Volleyball Championship title. 

In the audio category, members of the The Student Dive podcast received the Bronze Award. Honor Durham, Gaby Vinick, Cole Wozniak and Julia Wiessing were honored for their first of three episodes featuring stories from the fall semester Action Project, which explored students’ housing decisions.

Finally, The Daily Cardinal Staff received the Silver Award for Best Website Design. The Daily Cardinal’s redesigned website went live last spring.
