The body of 10-year-old Illiana “Lily” M. Peters, who went missing Sunday night, has been found in Chippewa Falls Monday morning. Her bike was first found Monday morning before police found her body in a nearby wooded area.
Peters’ father reported his daughter missing around 9 p.m. Sunday night after she failed to come home from a visit to her aunt’s house nearby. The bike was found a few blocks away from her aunt’s home. Peters’ body was later found off of the Duncan Creek Trail near Leinenkugel Brewery.
Chippewa Falls police are currently investigating her death as a homicide and claim that there may be a danger to the public. Police are following multiple leads but there is no one currently in police custody.
“The Chippewa Falls Police Department has numerous assisting agencies, and we will be working diligently and tirelessly on this case,” Matthew Kelm, police chief for the Chippewa Falls Police Department, said at a press conference Monday. “We encourage anyone with information to please contact the Chippewa Falls Police Department and to maintain a state of vigilance as there may be a danger to the public.”
The Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District is currently recommending that parents physically drop off and pick up their children who normally walk to school. Additional law enforcement has been requested at schools on behalf of the district. Law enforcement have not put any school on lockdown from the incident. Counseling will be available at CFAUSD schools this week.
