Elections for Senior Class Officers are underway

UW-Madison students started voting for the 2021-22 Senior Class Officers on Monday.

Once elected, the student leaders, including president and vice president, will work with the Office of the Chancellor, Office of Student Affairs and the Wisconsin Alumni Association and Foundation to plan events for seniors, decide on commencement speakers and choose the class gift.

Undergraduate students with at least 86 credits are eligible to vote in the election, where ballots must be submitted by March 31 at 11:59 p.m. Eligible voters received their own unique link to the ballot.

“It is so crucial that people vote in this election,” said the current Senior Class Communications Director Calli Hughes. “The events that we put on basically determine how connected our senior class will be and you have to have someone that is really well suited for that role.”

Along with the president and vice president that will be elected this week, three appointed positions — the Communications Director, Events Director and Philanthropy Director — also serve roles in Senior Class positions.

“As an entire team, we work collaboratively together to represent the senior class and the senior class needs and act as representatives of the senior class when communicating with University entities,” Hughes said.

This year, there are four president and vice president pairs and three individual candidates in the race.

“[The] President and Vice President serve as representatives of the Senior Class Office and the senior class specifically,” Hughes said. “They sit on a variety of committees that talk about campus-wide issues and campus conversations. They really push the values that they see the senior class needs.”

After the election, students who have at least 86 credits and who anticipate graduating during the Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 semesters can apply to serve in the three appointed positions by April 9 at 11:59 p.m.
