MMSD announces plan to remain all-virtual through its second quarter

The Madison Metropolitan School District will remain online until the end of January 2021.

Superintendent Dr. Carlton D. Jenkins announced the continuation of virtual learning Thursday in a letter to families. He cited local public health metrics and feedback from district families and staff as the district's reasons for keeping classes online. The MMSD also accepted input from the district’s senior leadership team and Madison Teachers Inc.

“It is always our preference to have students in our school buildings, learning face to face and engaging with teachers and staff,” Jenkins said. “It is also our ultimate responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone who enters our buildings each day.”

Madison Teachers Inc., which supports the decision, initially pushed MMSD to pursue an all-virtual learning model back in July shortly before the school district announced its plans to begin the year online.

“Virtual learning is the best model to ensure the physical and emotional health of our students, staff, and the families in their households,” the union stated. “As educators, this is a difficult decision for us because we pursue our profession out of our love of working with children – and that work is done best when we can do work with them in person.”

MMSD will continue to provide in-person instruction for special education classes as well as all-day childcare for students during virtual learning.

“We will continue to refine our all-virtual learning experience by continuing to listen to our students, families and teachers. Thank you for providing us grace and understanding as we move forward,” he said.
