UW-Madison leads way with most Peace Corps volunteers for fourth consecutive year

UW-Madison celebrated "Peace Corps Week” by maintaining its standing in the No. 1 spot for Peace Corps Volunteers for its fourth consecutive year.

Home to over 30,000 undergraduate students, UW-Madison is classified as a ‘large’ university within the standards of the Peace Corps. Annual statistics determined 79 alumnae are currently partaking in global volunteer work with the Peace Corps.

“UW-Madison is proud of these Badgers, who are working to better the lives of people around the world,” UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank said. “These volunteers build ties with the communities they serve, creating lasting relationships that strengthen global connections for years to come.”

Approximately 3,369 UW-Madison alumni have assumed involvement in the Peace Corps and served outside the U.S. since the establishment of the Peace Corps in 1961. 2020 statistics indicate a greater trend in UW-Madison volunteer involvement.

UW-Madison alumni Elisia Cintron and Lenai Johnson are credited with their contributions to global volunteer efforts with the Peace Corps.

Johnson volunteers in the Philippines, setting examples for girls and assisting individuals who have survived brutality due to gender discrimination.

Cintron volunteers in North Macedonia in an elementary school. She has found the culturally immersive experience to be incredibly impactful in her exploration of volunteer work and worldwide involvement.

“Now I’m only six months living in the country, and I have learned so much already — from the languages, to the cultures, to living with the host family, to working at a primary school with my students and other colleagues,” Cintron said. “I can honestly say that this program is going to be with me for the rest of my life.”

"Peace Corps Week" occurs from March 1-7.

During this time, UW-Madison will entertain events across campus that integrate the Peace Corps and UW-Madison involvement.
