Officer Diego Lema Hernandez started his new position Thursday as the UW-Madison Police Department Downtown liaison officer.
The Madison Police Department removed the Langdon Street Resource Officer Damion Figueroa in late October.
The new Downtown Liaison Officer is not meant to replace the Langdon officer, as Langdon will be one of the many areas Hernandez will cover in his patrol. Hernandez will patrol all off-campus locations where UW-Madison students live.
The goal of the new position is to bridge the gap between the students and the police department.
The UWPD Downtown Liaison was meant to take over in early November to overlap with the resignation of Officer Figueroa. Due to student complaints, the start date was pushed back in order for the university to incorporate students’ opinions into the guidelines of the new position.
