"Big Little Lies" will return following a shocking, brilliant end to season one.

Summer Arts Preview: Television

Big Little Lies

HBO’s stellar new drama returns for its second season, and it promises to be even better. This season looks to deal with the aftermath of a main character’s unintentional murder, and will reportedly seek to be even darker and deeper than before. With an only-expanding all-star cast featuring the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Meryl Streep playing the angered mother of the murdered character, “Big Little Lies” looks to become a real presence on the television landscape. No other show can mix first-grade parent drama with a murder-mystery in such a genuinely interesting and involving way. It is also worth mentioning that the series easily has one of the best soundtracks of any show currently in circulation. With such great style and evocative stories, it would be a big lie if I said this show was not worth the watch.

“Big Little Lies” will premiere its second season in June.

Stranger Things 3

“Stranger Things” is one of the biggest series in recent memory, and its third season appears to only grow the show’s legacy. This time around, the show seems to be taking a deeper look into its characters dealing with the struggles of growing up and the fears of being left behind by your friends. None of this is to say the show will lack the supernatural horror goodness fans have come to expect; the threats facing these characters will be better than ever, with assassins, demo-rats and the ever-present Mind Flayer in the Upside-Down all serving as challenges they will have to face. Few shows manage to capture the nostalgia, spectacle and horror that “Stranger Things” provides in spades, and the show only seems to be continuing this trend in its third season. With a show as good as this, it would be strange to avoid it this summer.

“Stranger Things 3” will be released in its entirety on July 4.

Good Omens

This adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s classic book looks to provide the same hilarity and fun as its inspiration. The show will follow angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley as they attempt to stop the end of times brought on by the coming of age of the Antichrist (who is actually a pretty good kid in the book). With Michael Sheen and David Tennant perfectly cast in its lead roles, the show has taken many of the right steps to be a huge hit. “Good Omens” seems like a promising addition to the television scene arriving this summer, and I do not believe its first season will be the end of times for the show.
