Wondering what's in store for a summer in Madison? Enjoy Bascom, the terrace and everything the isthmus has to offer.

A glance at a summer in Madison

It’s a known fact that Madison turns into a magical place in the summer. I think it’s fair to say that within these past few weeks, as the weather starts to warm up, almost everyone has had spring fever.

Could it be because we have been deprived of the sun all winter, or do the endless sunsets at memorial union truly make Madison the place to be? Yes and yes. There are endless summer activities at your disposal if you decide to stay in Madison this summer.

There are two very easy opportunities for you to get immersed into the Madison music community. Every Wednesday, make sure to check out the summer concert series that goes on right outside the capital lawn, and on Thursday nights, there are concerts at the Monona terrace.

If you’re looking to be active, get in touch with nature by taking a walk to Picnic Point and have a potluck BBQ and bonfire with s’mores. Grills are practically begging to be used, and if you have enough friends, this meal will be virtually free.

If nature is not your thing, then head to the Henry Vilas Zoo and paying a visit to the exotic jungle cats, birds, and polar bears. You can also explore the UW Arboretum which is just four miles off of campus and has many biking paths and hiking trails.

A summer wouldn’t be truly spent without a day on lake Mendota tanning on the dock and renting a paddle board or kayak from memorial union. The colorful campus chairs are officially out for the summer season, and are the perfect place to camp out to watch the sunset. Don’t forget a deck of cards, a good book and some bug spray.

Madison is a wonderful town that appreciates summer and warm weather all the more when we are finally able to be warm outside. Whatever your interest is, a summer in Madison will not be dull.
