Snow emergency declared for Madison, schools close as flurries continue

Following a night that brought more than half a foot of snow to Madison, the city declared a snow emergency Tuesday in anticipation of more accumulation and anticipated plowing difficulties.

The snow emergency, Madison’s second in the past two weeks, will remain in effect until at least Thursday morning as plowing crews continue to clear the streets. To make plowing easier, all cars parked on the street overnight will have to move to the odd-numbered side or run the risk of receiving a ticket or being towed.

Managing the recent snowfall proved to be more difficult than the city expected, mostly due to the high density and quantity. Madison’s Streets Division took the unusual step Monday of salting every residential road in the city — an action they have not taken since the 1970s. They also cautioned plowing could take several hours longer than usual, possibly extending to midday Wednesday.

In response to the conditions, Madison Metropolitan School District cancelled all classes Tuesday. The other 15 school districts in Dane County also called snow days. This is the sixth day so far this year Madison schools have been forced to cancel class because of weather concerns.

The National Weather Service instituted a Winter Storm Warning for the Madison area until 3 a.m. Wednesday, though they said snow flurries could continue later into the morning.
