Weekend crimes: Shots fired near Capitol, police arrest multi-charge suspect

Dozens of people fled after gunshots rang out in front of a downtown bar early Sunday morning, Madison police said.

The shots were fired around 2:00 a.m. outside a bar on Butler Street, just two blocks from the Capitol. When police arrived on the scene, they saw people running from the area. Police said they could find no one who had been injured or any damage to nearby property.

Madison police also made an arrest this weekend for an offense that happened on Nov. 20, in which a man broke into a campus area apartment building and exposed himself to two residents.

The suspect, who was in possession of two stolen Apple Watches at the time of his arrest, has a lengthy criminal record, with 14 previous cases heard at the Dane County Court. The 23-year-old has been charged with felony retail theft twice and felony intimidation with a domestic abuse modifier. He has served at least two years of combined jail time dating back to 2012 when he served four months in jail as a 17-year-old for misdemeanor theft.

In the most recent arrest, police charged him with lewd and lascivious behavior, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to nine months in jail and a fine of $10,000.
