Students gather for lecture discussing gold rush and global politics

Columbia professor Mae Ngai came to campus Tuesday to discuss the Chinese Question: Gold Rushes and Global Politics.

Over 150 people came to listen to guest lecturer Dr. Mae Ngai early Tuesday evening at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. Ngai is an American historian and family professor of Asian American Studies and professor of history at Columbia University.

Her lecture mainly covered the role of Chinese miners in California, Australia and South Africa during the 19th century. She also discussed topics such as ethnic enclaves in Chinese communities, the social and economic impacts that the Chinese had toward the gold mining industry and national exclusionary legislation in 1882.

“It’s worth noting that while exclusion strongly limited Chinese from coming to the United States, it was not able to drive all Chinese from the country including from the goldfields. They built communities that strived through the end of the 19th century,” Ngai said.

Following the lecture, there was a question-and-answer session where the audience asked questions regarding her research and her published books.

“Having events like this is all about promoting visibility, engaging the community and sharing intellectual ideas and research with one another,” Cindy I-Fen Cheng, the director of the Asian American Studies Program said.

The event was presented by the Asian American Studies Program and The Anonymous Fund at The University of Wisconsin-Madison.
