The UW-Madison Police Department arrested a man in a child abuse case Sunday evening.
On Sunday, June 24, shortly after 5 p.m., a 13-year-old boy called UWPD and reported he had been assaulted and strangled by his mother’s boyfriend.
When officers arrived to the scene, the boy appeared to have significant injuries on his face and arms. He also had pain in his chest and abdomen. The suspect was not found at the scene.
The boy was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Later in the evening, the suspect was seen driving on campus by UWPD officers. The officers responded and arrested Mark Shawanokasic, 37, of Madison.
The suspect faces charges of tentative child abuse, disorderly conduct and strangulation. He is currently booked into the Dane County Jail.
An ongoing investigation is being conducted by UWPD.
