20-year-old Madison man arrested for attacking two people near campus

A 20-year-old Madison man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly punched two people repeatedly near the UW-Madison campus.

Madison Police Department officers arrested Thomas G. Giles shortly after he allegedly attacked a woman and man who were walking together on the 500 Block of University Avenue at about 1:40 a.m., according to an MPD incident report.

The victims, both 21-years-old, said the suspect was following them and calling the woman “derogatory names,” according to the report. When they told the suspect to stop harassing them, he responded with force.

The suspect punched the male victim multiple times. When the woman “tried to intervene,” police said, Giles hit her in the mouth.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after and arrested Giles, who denied involvement in the incident.

Giles is charged with battery.
