UW-Madison student hit by alleged drunk driver

A 19-year-old UW-Madison student faces significant injuries after being hit by the car of an intoxicated driver while trying to cross an intersection near campus early Saturday morning, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

The victim was struck just before 1 a.m. on West Johnson Street, near its intersection with North Frances Street, and taken to a local emergency room. No further information on the condition of the victim has been released.

Police arrested the driver, 22-year-old Emily Schumacher, following sobriety tests at the scene. Schumacher is tentatively charged with causing injury while operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

The area of the incident was shut down following the crash, but reopened around 2 a.m.
