MPD officer saves suicidal man

A Madison Police Officer was able to save the life of a suicidal man Friday afternoon, according to an incident report.

The 30-year-old man was about to leap from the State Street Capitol Parking Garage at 214 North Carroll St.

"As I lunged towards him, I saw him lean his body forward. I grabbed his left arm as I dropped my body weight towards the ground, attempting to pull him towards me," the officer said in her report.

She also noted that another MPD officer and sergeant were on the scene within seconds of her grabbing him. The officers had been trying to negotiate with the man before he made his decision to jump, according to the report.

“Thanks to their efforts, he was taken to a hospital to get help,” MPD Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain said in the incident report.
