UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank announced Wiscards will not be modified for use as voter IDs in a Friday online blog post.
Following a law passed in 2011, this year’s statewide elections will be the first time voters are required to show a form of identification. Blank stressed the university’s commitment to providing students with easy access to valid voter ID, but she said the cost of the Wiscard method would inconvenience students and administration.
Blank explained in the post that reproducing Wiscards to become voter IDs would be challenging because of their extensive features that allow students to access buildings and pay for food and supplies. She also detailed other voter ID requirements, such as student signatures and two-year renewal, that would not align with the Wiscard.
Voters can learn more about ID requirements after a Monday morning news conference with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board.
