Van Hise heat buildup marks two fires in two days on UW-Madison campus

A burning smell reported in Van Hise Hall Friday caused the Madison Fire Department to return to campus for the second time in two days.

Firefighters tracked the smell to an electrical equipment box on the 16th floor. The room also contained computer servers and other related materials.

No smoke or flames were detected, the fire department said Monday, and the burning smell did not spread to other areas in the building. The heat was also contained within the box itself.

The UW security officer who reported the smell stayed on the scene until electrical workers arrived to investigate, MFD Public Information Officer Cynthia Schuster said in the report.

The MFD also extinguished a small structure fire Thursday under roof tiles in the attic of Memorial Union.

The estimated damage costs of the heat buildup have not yet been announced, nor have the causes of Thursday or Friday’s fires been determined.
