City faces cyber attack in aftermath of Tony Robinson's shooting

An ongoing cyber attack targeting city and county communication systems launched late Monday has impacted the city of Madison’s website and email system, according to a Department of Emergency Management press release.

According to the release, there has been comparable activity that has occurred in the past in areas and local administrations following tragic events similar to Tony Robinson’s death on Friday.

The perpetrators of the cyber attack are currently unknown. In the release, officials announced “public safety computers used by law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical agencies not only in the City of Madison, but agencies across all of Dane County,” are being affected.

Local Madison and Dane County utilities have also been alerted to the threat, the release said.

“Madison police is investigating the cyber attack along with state and federal officials,” MPD Lt. Kelly Donahue said, citing that further information regarding the attacks is not yet available.

At this point in time, it is unknown whether the full investigation into the cyber attack will fall under city or county jurisdiction, according to Donahue.
