The U.S. Department of Education granted approval for the University of Wisconsin System to award federal financial aid to one of the programs within the UW Flexible Option format late last week.
The UW Flexible Option is a self-paced online education system for nontraditional students or adults trying to receive UW degrees or certificates. According to Regent Vice President Regina Millner, the UW Flexible Option programs are designed to meet areas of strong student demand.
“This decision by the Department of Education will move the UW Flexible Option to the next level, and reaffirms UW System’s standing as an innovative educational leader,” UW System Board of Regents President Michael Falbo said.
The Department of Education approval for the UW System is a first for students enrolled in competency-based educational programs. Originally, students in UW Flexible Option did not have the same access to aid as those enrolled in traditional university settings.
“The opportunity for students in the UW Flexible Option to receive federal financial aid will open more doors to nontraditional and place-bound students, and help UW System further develop the talent base of Wisconsin,” UW System President Ray Cross said.
Though the approval only applies to the UW College’s Associate of Arts and Science program, it opens the door to the potential for more aid in the future. UW-Milwaukee is attempting to award federal aid to four programs through UW Flexible Option, according to the system release.
“This financial aid decision will broaden our ability to meet the needs of Wisconsin and the nation,” Cross said.
