Police resort to pepper spray to break up downtown brawl

A Madison Police Department officer used his pepper spray to break up a large fight inside a downtown parking ramp early Saturday morning, according to an MPD report.

Officers used the spray to break up several fights that were happening simultaneously in the State Street Campus parking ramp, located at 415 N. Lake St., according to the report by MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain.

The fights seemed to be connected to another large fight that took place on the 400 block of North Frances Street earlier in the evening. Officers, some as part of the Downtown Safety Initiative, sprayed the crowd after the combatants ignored security guards’ orders to exit the ramp.

According to the report, the use of pepper spray prompted many of the combatants to leave the premises.
