MPD officers cleared after fatally shooting suspect May 2

Two Madison Police Department personnel were exonerated Tuesday following an internal investigation into their involvement in a May 2 shooting, according to an MPD statement.

Sgt. David McClurg and Officer Carlin Becker fatally wounded the shooting suspect after arriving at the man’s apartment, located at 2617 E. Washington Ave., and discovering the man had killed his wife and daughter.

MPD Lt. Cory Nelson conducted McClurg and Becker’s investigation and found both operated within their rights to use “deadly force” under MPD policy. The policy states officers are allowed to use “deadly force” in defense of someone in danger, to defend themselves, to prevent the escape of a suspect or to protect themselves from an animal they believe to be dangerous, according to the statement.

Both McClurg and Becker remain on leave from the department, but will be allowed to return to active duty as they are ready, according to the statement.
