The Associated Students of Madison Student Services Finance Committee met Monday to discuss midyear budget transfers for groups funded by the General Student Services Fund.
Currently, it is possible for registered student organizations to spend money left over from their budget so that any remaining funds do not count against their fiscal responsibility as recognized by SSFC.
SSFC Chair David Vines said with the current procedure there is a “reverse incentive for groups to spend money they might not necessarily have to spend.”
Committee members discussed the possibility of implementing a system in which groups could return unused funds to the SSFC to be used as Finance Committee grants.
Vines also mentioned the importance of encouraging groups to give back unused funds from their budgets, discussing a potential incentive method. Vines said he wanted to send a message to the various organizations, saying that it would be better to reallocate funds than have them remain unused.
“If you weren’t going to spend the money anyway, we’d rather it go to other RSOs than just having it sit there in reserves,” Vines said.
SSFC plans to present a midyear budget transfer proposal to the Student Council by April 16.
