Dane County Farmers' Market

The summer Dane County Farmers' Market will open April 19.

Farmers' Market to open strong despite cold winter

Larry Johnson, manager of the Dane County Farmers' Market, said Tuesday that he expects the market to open on a strong note, despite cold weather.

According to its website, customers can buy everything from vegetables and flowers to meats, cheeses and specialty products from about 300 vendors over the year at the market. The summer market will open April 19 with approximately 100 vendors on Capitol Square, according to Johnson.

The produce sold at the market depends on the vendors’ crops. Johnson said the market will still have a “good selection” on opening day, despite the frigid winter this year. He said he is confident that farmers always adapt to the naturally weather-dependent process of growing crops.

Johnson said he expects to have a good turnout based on the usual hype the market gets from the public.

“People would like to get outside, they want to get to the market,” Johnson said. “There’s pent-up interest and demand and we expect a really good turnout.”

The summer market is held annually and is scheduled to open rain or shine, according to its website. It will be open every Saturday from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m., and every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The cold winter has just delayed a few things, but the sun’s coming out [and] crops are being planted in the greenhouses already,” Johnson said. “I think it’ll be a pretty good year.”
