District 5 Board of Supervisor candidates

Dane County Board of Supervisors candidates Chris Hoffman, left, and Leland Pan, right, are on the ballot for the District 5 seat in Tuesday's election.

Dane County voters to give input on marijuana legalization, vote on local candidates

Dane County residents will vote Tuesday in local elections, determining the District 5 county board seat and giving input on the full legalization of marijuana in Dane County.

Races include three court of appeals judges, 39 circuit court judges, county board supervisors, mayors, village presidents and school board members, according to a Wisconsin Government Accountability Board release.

Incumbent Dane County Board Supervisor Leland Pan, a fourth-year University of Wisconsin-Madison student, and former College Democrats Chair and UW-Madison senior Chris Hoffman are running for the District 5 Board of Supervisors seat, which represents the campus area.

Other issues up for voting include advisory questions about nonpartisan redistricting and the legalization of marijuana in Dane County as well as cutting the pay and benefits of Milwaukee County Board supervisors, according to the release.

While the advisory votes on marijuana legalization would not have a direct effect on legislation, politicians can use their constituents’ views on the issue.

GAB predicts 12 percent of voters out of Wisconsin’s 4,400,015 voting-age adults will participate in the spring election, slightly less than a similar election in 2010, according to the release.

“Spring Elections are the people’s chance to have their say about local government and schools,” Kevin Kennedy, GAB director and general counsel said in the release. “These local officials and referenda can have a significant effect on people’s taxes and the quality of life.”

Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
