Legislators discuss student debt in Twitter town hall

Legislators and interest groups participated in an online town hall on Twitter to discuss policy addressing student loan debt.

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., helped kick off the campaign hosted by Higher Ed Not Debt, a national campaign dedicated to the issue, with a panel in Washington, D.C. She said college affordability is an essential investment for economic and social improvement.

“We as a country, we as a people, are going to make the investments in our young people,” Warren said.

U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., referenced two measures he is working on that would allow students to easily refinance their student loans. He stressed the need for increased financial aid rather than increased tuition for public universities.

State Rep. Cory Mason, D-Racine, previewed legislation during the Twitter event he said he hopes to pass that would address loan refinancing, allow amounts of student loan debt to be tax deductible and set policy standards for transparency for lenders and loan applicants.
