State Rep. Chris Taylor expresses frustration over Department of Justice handling ‘Solidarity Singalong’ citations

State Rep. Chris Taylor, D-Madison expressed frustration Thursday because the Department of Justice has continued to prosecute citizens who received citations in 2011 for unlawfully protesting at the state Capitol.

Dane County Judge John Markson dismissed 29 tickets yesterday because the charges had been issued under an outdated policy, according to a statement released by Taylor.

Taylor said she is “amazed” the DOJ is prosecuting people after it issued notices informing citizens that the charges had been changed. She said it is costing the taxpayers a lot of money and clogging the court system.

Taylor added that the way the DOJ has been treating people through the court process is “appalling.”

Taylor said it is alarming how how the Walker administration has been so extreme in trying to silence people speaking in opposition.

“The Walker administration is willing to disregard protected speech to prosecute people... based on the content of what they are saying.”
