UW System announces finalists in president search

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents announced Thursday the search for the seventh UW System President has been narrowed down to three candidates.

The position was vacated at the end of 2013 by former UW System President Kevin Reilly, after he served nine years in the role.

Board of Regents President Michael Falbo released the list of the remaining candidates in a statement, which consists of Raymond Cross, Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Colleges and the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Peter Garland, Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and Robert King, the president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.

Board of Regents Vice President Regina Millner, who chaired the eighteen-person search and screen committee for the new system president, said the committee is “pleased with the three candidates that are the finalists.”

The search and screen committee will choose one nominee to be presented to the entire Board of Regents Jan. 9 for approval, following interviews conducted by the selection committee Jan. 6.

Throughout the day Jan. 6, each finalist will hold open forum hours through videoconference, giving faculty and students a chance to meet and hear from the candidates, according to the system’s release.

Cross said it was an honor to be considered for the role.

“It’s a humbling experience to be selected as a finalist to lead this great university system,” Cross said. “I wish the Board of Regents the best in this process of determining the next UW System leader.”

Garland and King did not return requests for comment.
