State Assembly passes two bills regarding gun rights and municipal power

The Wisconsin State Assembly passed two bills Tuesday, one expanding gun rights and another increasing municipal power.

The first bill would allow Wisconsin residents to legally purchase firearms from other states. Currently, residents could only purchase long guns from states that share a border.

State Rep. John Spiros, R-Marshfield, said the bill would align Wisconsin policy with 42 other states. The bill was passed 94-3 and will now move to the state Senate.

The other bill allows local municipalities to charge residents with marijuana possession after the state declines to prosecute. The bill will move to Walker’s desk after being approved through a voice vote Tuesday.

State Rep. Chris Taylor, D-Madison, opposed the bill on the grounds that residents using cannabis for chronic pain will be targeted by municipal governments.

State Rep. Brett Hulsey, D-Madison, said the bill was an example of “reefer madness,” and the Assembly should not be wasting their time over a “silly crime.”

The amended bill will return to the state Senate for a second vote.
