Dane County DA announces Attorney General candidacy

Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne is officially in the running to become the next Attorney General as of Thursday morning.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced Oct. 7 he would not seek re-election in 2014 following a two-term tenure after first being elected in 2006.

According to a statement the D.A.’s office released Thursday, Ozanne intends to crack down on the proliferation of heroin and and sex trafficking from the office of Attorney General.

“We face significant law enforcement challenges,” Ozanne said in the statement. “It will take an experienced front-line prosecutor to meet those challenges.”

Ozanne contends his 13 years as the Dane County D.A., ensuring safe communities from a behavioral corrections standpoint, best prepared him to best address the issues currently plaguing Wisconsin residents.

Those issues include upholding a woman’s right to make personal health care decisions, providing clean air and water and holding lawmakers responsible for the “rules of ethics and open government,” according to the statement.

“Wisconsin residents want an Attorney General who does the job without fear or favor,” Ozanne said in the statement. “Wisconsin residents deserve an Attorney General who works for them … not for partisan political interests and not for the special interests.”

The primary elections will take place August 2014.
