Woman jumps off State Street building, dies Sunday

Police do not suspect any foul play was involved when an 18-year-old woman jumped to her death from a building on the 500 block of State Street Sunday morning, according to Madison Police Department Sgt. Jason Ostrenga.

Ostrenga said the MPD is calling the incident a suicide because there were witnesses that saw the 18-year-old on the roof of either The Towers on State, located at 502 N. Frances St. or The Statesider Apartments, located at 505 N. Frances St., before she jumped at approximately 11:09 a.m. Ostrenga said he was unsure exactly which building, because the woman landed in the alley between the two.

Ostrenga could not say if the woman was a University of Wisconsin-Madison student.

The police will likely not release any more details about the incident because Ostrenga said MPD protocol is to not report suicides, hoping to discourage other members of the community who may be feeling depressed to “copycat or mimic,” suicidal actions.

Correction: This article was changed at 2:45 a.m. Monday to clarify that the deceased individual identified as a woman.
