Van Hollen, DOJ ask John Doe investigation records be made public

Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen made a legal push recently to make records collected in the investigation of former staffers to Gov. Scott Walker while he held office in Milwaukee public.

The public records issue is currently playing out in a case where Kelly Rindfleisch, Walker’s former deputy chief of staff when he was Milwaukee County Executive, is appealing her conviction for campaigning while on public time.

Rindfleisch has said that keeping the documents secret will stop her personal information from being released and will also be necessary as she continues in her appeal.

Van Hollen and the Department of Justice have joined news outlets, such as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, who disagree with Rindfleisch and are requesting the records be released.

“Continued secrecy does not serve any public interest and does not comport with the strong policy, declared by the legislature, of public access to court records,” Assistant Attorney General Christopher Wren wrote in a court-filed motion Tuesday.
