Area homeless man helps tourist who was attacked downtown

Police are investigating the assault of a Michigan man, in Madison on business, who told police a young man kicked him in the head after a conversation about evolution and religion turned hostile early Thursday morning, according to a police report.

The 51-year-old tourist said he was engaged in  “good dialogue”on State Street with some elderly men when a young man joined the conversation, proceeded to push the victim to the ground and kick him in the head, according to the report. The victim suffered a black eye.

The report said a homeless man who, had been a part of the discussion, helped the man to his feet, walked him back to the hotel where the businessman was staying and provided the police with a detailed description of the attacker.

The report describes the suspect as a white male in his late teens to early twenties, 6 foot 2 inches tall with a “slender to medium build,” wearing white & green striped boxers, jeans and a long-sleeved blue shirt.
