University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers quarterback Tanner McEvoy returned to the team after he was hit in the head and mugged downtown early Sunday morning, according to a Wisconsin Athletics statement.
Witnesses reported they saw two men and two women near McEvoy, a redshirt sophomore from Arizona Western College, at approximately 1:45 a.m. at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and East Dayton Street, according to Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain in a police report.
McEvoy was treated for two minor head injuries, according to the report. He also told police his wallet, watch and iPhone were stolen.
The report describes the two male suspects as thin, black and in their late teens but does not include details about the female suspects’ appearances.
According to the Wisconsin Athletics statement, McEvoy participated in “team activities” Monday.
“First and foremost we are happy that Tanner is physically OK after this attack,” head coach Gary Andersen said. “It’s terrible to get a call about something like this but we are grateful the injuries were not serious.”
No suspects were named in the McEvoy attack as of Monday evening.
The incident marks the second summer in a row in which multiple suspects attacked a Badger football player. Last summer, four men approached and attacked former Badgers running back Montee Ball.
As Ball was walking home Aug. 1, he was confronted, thrown to the ground and beaten on the 500 block of University Avenue. He suffered a concussion after being kicked in the head. The attack followed a fight at a house party July 27, which included two other UW-Madison football players.
The nearly year-long investigation underwent a new development July 17 when Dane County officially charged Karlis Griffin, the final suspect in Ball’s attack, with substantial battery and intended bodily harm, according to court records.
The three other suspects pleaded guilty earlier in the academic year.
