A Democratic state senator plans to introduce legislation that would change current state voter registration procedures, including making it legal to vote after living in the state for 10 days before the election instead of the previously required 28 days.
The legislation, which would replace current rules passed in the last state legislative session, would also allow people to pre-register for an election and request an absentee ballot in person any time before 5:00 p.m. the day before the election date. Currently, the state requires people to pre-register and request absentee ballots before 5:00 p.m. on the Friday before the election.
State Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison, said in a statement Friday the new legislation would help to remove “unnecessary barriers” in the state’s current voting process.
State Republicans were unavailable for comment on Risser’s legislation, which the senator will introduce to a Republican-controlled legislature.
