Powder-filled envelope incident in Beloit sends 15 to hospital, no serious injuries

Fifty-six people were quarantined in a Beloit health center Wednesday morning after three individuals experienced negative side effects because they were exposed to an envelope containing a white powder.

Of the 56 individuals, 15 were brought to local hospitals for further treatment. All 15 had been released by approximately 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to Beth Jacobson, the assistant to the Beloit city manager.

A mobile crime lab set up in the health center’s parking lot ran tests on the substance after authorities responded to the scene. The substance had not been identified upon publication of this article.

Jacobson said officials would continue working to identify the man who delivered the envelope. She said the situation would become clearer if authorities identify the substance and are able to bring the man who delivered the envelope in for questioning.

Jacobson, who said the attack was likely not related to Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings, also said officials were thankful the incident was relatively minor.
