Police arrested a Madison man after he stole a 21-year-old woman’s wallet from the Nitty Gritty Thursday.
Bernard Beck, 36, stole the woman’s wallet from her purse at approximately 6:30 p.m., which was on the back of her chair at the bar, located at 223 N. Frances St., according to a report.
The woman did not immediately realize she had been burglarized, but as soon as she noticed her wallet was stolen she alerted her credit card companies and found one card had already been used at a downtown grocery store, according to the report.
The Madison Police Department used surveillance video to identify Beck and arrested him at the Nitty Gritty after he returned to the bar.
Beck denied involvement in the theft, telling police he had been released from jail three days earlier and had “turned over a new leaf,” according to the report.
The suspect was with two other men at the time of the theft, but they have not been identified, according to the report.
