Weekend Round-Up: Wisconsin teams find success in weekend matches

Track

Wisconsin men’s track star Japheth Cato made history Saturday, becoming only the third collegiate athlete to break the 6,000 point mark in the heptathlon multiple times. Austin Mudd became the second athlete in UW history to break the four-minute mile barrier en route to a win at the Meyo Mile in South Bend, Ind.

Women’s pentathlon athlete Deanna Latham put up a personal best in the event Friday to overtake the conference lead, while throwers Taylor Smith and Kelsey Card finished first and second respectively in both the shot put and the weight throw Saturday at the Warhawk Classic.

Swimming

Sophomores Ivy Martin and Drew TeDuits set UW Natatorium pool records this weekend in the women’s 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, and men’s 200-yard backstroke, respectively.

Both the men and women swimmers took down Purdue and the women added a victory against Illinois while both teams lost to Minnesota during the meet.

Tennis

Men’s tennis swept its opponents Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium, winning every match in a 4-0 victory over the University of Illinois at Chicago and a 7-0 win against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Women’s senior Hannah Berner won matches both on the singles side and as part of a doubles team en route to Wisconsin’s close 4-3 victory over Boston University Saturday, giving the Terriers their first loss of the season.
