UW ranks among ‘best values in public colleges’

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine named the University of Wisconsin-Madison among the “Best Values in Public Colleges” in its February 2013 issue.

UW-Madison ranked number 13 out of 100 public universities on the 2013 list. Kiplinger’s ranked the schools based on cost, financial aid, student debt after graduation, competitiveness, graduation rates and academic support.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill topped the list for the 12th year in a row. UW-La Crosse, the only other representative from Wisconsin, ranked number 73.

Kiplinger’s cited figures from Peterson’s Undergraduate Database, which showed UW-Madison to have a 53 percent four-year graduation rate and $24,140 average debt at graduation allowing it to be among the best values in the nation.

The magazine also found UW-Madison meets 73 percent of the need for financial aid, stating the average need-based aid is $6,224 and the average non-need-based aid is $3,090 for students.
