U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Wisconsin-Madison 38th overall on a list of the top 400 universities in the world.
UW-Madison moved up since last year, when the same organization ranked it 41st overall.
The university competed against both public and private institutions from 45 countries, according to the U.S. News & World Report website.
A university’s ranking included criteria such as academic reputation, employer reputation and publication citations per faculty member, according to the site. UW-Madison’s strongest category was academic reputation. Its weakest category of the criteria was one measuring the proportion of international to non-international students.
In September, U.S. News & World Report also ranked UW-Madison the tenth best public college in the world for the second year in a row, tied with the University of California-Santa Barbara.
