Madison firefighters responded to a fire caused by burnt popcorn at the Der Rathskeller Saturday, which is the second fire this month at Memorial Union.
Madison Fire Department spokesperson Lori Wirth said firefighters responded to the fire caused at approximately 2:47 p.m Saturday.
Members of the Der Rathskeller’s staff reported a popcorn heating element was left on, which ignited the leftover popcorn, according to Wirth.
Despite the heavy smoke and flames reported by staff, the Der Rathskeller’s fire alarms did not go off, and the general manager put out the fire with a chemical extinguisher, according to statement.
Firefighters advised employees not to use the popcorn machine or bar area until it could be cleaned and cleared for use, according to Wirth.
Wirth said in a statement the building was not evacuated and there were no injuries reported.
On Oct. 8, a fire caused by flammable construction materials caused $10,000 in damages and injured one firefighter.
