Sports rivalry came to a breaking point early Sunday morning when a visiting University of Minnesota student was knocked unconscious in a downtown bar during a sports-related argument.
Patrons at the Kollege Klub, 529 Lake St., were arguing over a topic revolving around sports when the 21-year-old Minnesota student, in town for the Badgers-Gophers football game, decided to step in, according to Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain.
The victim, who was intoxicated at the time, said he thinks he was hit by a stray punch or elbow, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head, according to a police report.
DeSpain said in a statement the student suffered from a large lump on the the head and was treated at a local hospital.
The victim said he did not recall what the argument was about, according to a police report.
