Man beaten on Lathrop Street Sunday

Police reported two men were beaten after defending a woman who had fallen outside of a house party on Lathrop Street early Sunday morning.

An 18-year-old man said he was punched in the face after confronting a group of five men who were laughing at a woman who had fallen down, according to Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain.

A 19-year-old man came to his friend’s aid, but one of the five men struck him with a bottle, according to a police report.

DeSpain said it is unknown if the five suspects were intoxicated, although alcohol was most likely present at the party.

“They indicate that it was a bring-your-own-[alcohol]-type party but nothing that reports their level of intoxication,” DeSpain said.

The blow to the head brought the 19-year-old man to the ground, and he said he was punched multiple times while on the pavement, according to DeSpain.

DeSpain said the 19-year-old required several stitches to close a cut beneath an eye and suffered a head wound.
